During the WPA (Works Progress Administration) Era, artists sought to make their art accessible to regular, everyday people. Many artists focused on the people themselves, especially laborers, the poor, and the disenfranchised. They also featured urban and rural built environments, contemporary modes of transportation, and other subjects that artists found close at hand, both on the farm and in the city. Overall, WPA-era artists aimed to undermine elitism, reject overt foreign influence, and avoid confusing abstraction, all to communicate a clear narrative and create what they saw as a shared American experience through art. This exhibition, drawn from the collection of Sandra and Bram Dijkstra, includes work from the American East, Midwest, and West and showcases the artists’ divergent political views but collective interest in humanity.

Amidst the political and social upheaval at the beginning of the 20th century, German and Austrian artists turned to stark, almost brutal imagery to create a new kind of art. Figural distortion, flattened perspective, and straightforward technique served to express their feelings and thoughts in visual form. Ranging from perceptive self-portraits to biting social critiques, this exhibition explores the subjects and styles of Expressionist artists, including Max Beckmann, Georg Grosz, and Käthe Kollwitz.

Pinkie Rideau is a contemporary blues musician, writer, producer, vocalist, and philanthropist. Having had numerous medical problems since childhood as well as her share of heart breaking family loss, she falls back on sheer experience in forming songs for stage. Drawing from a background steeped in Cajun roots and exposure to the many types of blues that the world has to offer, her music relates to just about everyone. From funny moments to gut wrenching love and loss, she will stimulate your senses.

Pinkie Rideau has been performing in Northern California since 1982, centalizing her efforts in the Sacramento Area. She has always leaned toward blues as a genre, only for its essence and variety. She has a writing style that sets her apart. A whimsical sassiness that everyone can relate to is exactly what she is shooting for. Whether it’s begging for forgiveness in The River, or laying out a plain request in Booty Call – you always know what she is singing about and will soon be singing along. Pinkie says she can’t imagine what is next in life because she has done everything she has always wanted to do already, and things just get better and better.

Featuring:
-Pinkie Rideau – Vocals and Noise
-Tj Furtado – Bass Guitar, Vocals
-Brad Evans – Keys
-Zane Toberer – Drums
-Dave Segal – Guitar
