The Gorman Museum was established in 1973 by the Department of Native American Studies and is dedicated to working with and representing contemporary Native American artists. As one of the few venues in the country with a mission in the field of contemporary Native American art, the Gorman Museum has the capacity to support and expand the field impactfully. The Gorman Museum is renowned for its strong exhibition history with over 225 group and 88 solo shows and numerous touring exhibitions. It has long been a beacon of diversity on the UC Davis campus, and a space dedicated to underrepresented Native American artists. The museum hosts artists, student groups, workshops, performances, and visitors from across North America as well as Indigenous artists around the globe. Programming is rooted in Indigenous knowledge, protocol, and expertise, presented in a place where all are welcome.
