Whoop Dee Doo! April showers won’t come between me and my 2nd Saturday plans. There’s art to be seen, performances to watch, red doors to inspire, and bourbon to drink!
To fuel up for my day ahead, I’m going to FINALLY try Mimosa House in East Sacramento for brunch. All I know about this place is that they serve champagne and there’s always a line whenever I drive by on the weekend. I take those as two very positive signs.
After my champagne brunch, I’ll head over to Sac State to catch the 2pm performance of the Sacramento Dance Sampler, a showcase for the five-day Festival of the Arts. The concert this year will be an “unplugged” version featuring dancers from many local and Bay Area dance companies.
After the show, I’m going to make my way to the R Street Corridor to catch the newest exhibit at ARTHOUSE on R, “Habitat Doors Project”.
Throughout the month, the gallery will be showcasing a very special exhibit in partnership with local artists and Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sacramento. This exhibit features selected artists who have taken a recycled door from the Habitat ReStore and created art on it in the theme of “What Home Means to You”. The new and unique project was created as a venue for local artists to celebrate their talents while making a statement and bringing attention and support to the need for affordable home-ownership opportunities in our local community.
The exhibit will include the creative works of David Asch, Macee Burns, Sheldon Carpenter, Sondra Hersh, Kate Riley, Jennifer Tachera, and Kerri Warner
The doors will be auctioned off on April 28th at The Railyards as part of the Hard Hats & High Heels Gala auction.
For my next stop, I’ll make the trip a few blocks down R Street to Verge Center for the Arts for their opening reception of Whoop Dee Doo! This is a new large-scale collaborative project led by New York-based Whoop Dee Doo. The group will reside at Verge for a whirlwind collaboration between three local performance groups — The BlyueRose Dance Project, The Royalty Dancers, and Ballet Folklorico de Sacramento. Working every day during their residency with students from the Met Sacramento High School, Verge’s gallery will be transformed to present an original variety show to be performed during the reception. The final result will be an all-encompassing installation, paired with a live-filmed and wildly interactive variety show that is free and open to the public.
FYI: It is highly encouraged to come dressed in yellow or gold and be ready to DANCE!
My last stop of the night will be to the Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services. Not a typical 2nd Saturday spot, but for a delicious event supporting an amazing cause. For the Sacramento Food Film Festival‘s capstone event, Bourbon and Bites, Food Literacy Center teamed up with the Sacramento Bartenders Guild, the Bourbon Babes and some of the best chefs in the region to bring an event that celebrates southern cuisine and bourbon! The evening and week-long event will wrap-up with a Finale Party consisting of good people and music.
