Gone Fishing: Celebrate Caviar, Farm-to-Fork’s Hidden Gem

If you’re at all familiar with Sacramento, you know the region is a treasure trove of good eats. But one particular gem has yet to receive its proper shine — or, if you consider that Sacramento produces 80 percent of United States’ domestic supply of caviar, it’s more accurate to say this not-so-hidden gem has yet to shine locally. This is what Celebrate Caviar Sacramento is looking to change. Beginning during National Caviar Day on Thursday, July 18 through Sunday, July 21, over 20 Sacramento restaurants will put their own unique twist on the delicacy, integrating caviar throughout their menu and making it accessible to all.

Each dish is designed by chefs with the intention of putting a smile on your face as caviar makes its way into everything from fries to tacos as it’s paired with beer and wine. Culinary staples in Sacramento’s Farm-to-Fork scene such as Kru’s esteemed head chef and owner Billy Ngo will take caviar to the next level. Sacramento’s leading Japanese restaurant presents a mouth-watering, fish-on-rice dish called Sturgeon Trio Nigiri for their caviar twist. A wide swath of favorite eateries will also participate, including Tiger, The Firehouse, Hook and Ladder, and Frank Fat’s among many others!

Next Level

Those looking for a deep dive into the world of caviar can check out one of four special events taking place during Celebrate Caviar:

  • Thursday, July 18: On National Caviar Day, join in for a high brow happy hour at The Firehouse Restaurant. Try three caviar canapes paired with delicious cocktails in the beautiful Courtyard Grill.
  • Saturday, July 20: Those curious how Sacramento sustains itself as the U.S.’s Caviar Capital can attend a tour of Tsar Nicoulai Strugeon Farm in Wilton. Fun on the farm continues with a champagne and caviar tasting — farm-to-fork doesn’t get any fresher than that!
  • Saturday, July 20: For drinks and eats, there’s no better stop than the Caviar Day Rage at Canon, which, of course, will feature a pairing of caviar and drinks along with music on the patio.
  • Sunday, July 21: A four-course, Sunday morning Caviar Brunch at Allora will feature a robust edible tablescape and highlighting caviar’s versatility.
