The year was 2007, I was 13 years old, and my mom took me to see the movie, Hairspray. With catchy songs and a great storyline, it quickly became one of my favorite movies. Even as an adult, it’s a comfort movie I will re-watch at least once a month. So, you can imagine that my inner tween was thrilled to see the premier of HAIRSPRAY at the SAFE Credit Union Performing Arts Center.

Take a step back into the ‘60s with 16-year-old Tracy Turnblad. Tracy is a girl with big dreams and even bigger hair, determined to dance her way onto the most popular teen TV show in Baltimore, The Corny Collins Show. As she gains popularity, her dreams shift to social justice in the show.

The production perfectly captures the ‘60s vibes with funky, vibrant, and colorful sets and costumes. In addition to the costumes, there are some hair-raising wigs that are larger than life and add character to the show. Unlike the movie, the stage production is geared towards adults with campy innuendos and gags that will make you giggle. In one of my favorite moments during “(You’re) Timeless to Me” Edna Turnblad, played by Andrew Levitt, does a fun play on Sacramento and farm to fork that will leave you blushing.

While the play is overall lighthearted, it does an amazing job showing the hardships of racism, discrimination, and societal norms of the decade. “I Know Where I’ve Been” is a haunting reminder of the struggle that many have faced and how that struggle will lead to the path of change. The play doesn’t just touch on these issues, but also shows how discrimination and attitudes can be changed.
