There is something so wonderful about seeing a play that leaves you with a delightful feeling. For me, I get that feeling when a show is well rounded and carries a light-hearted mood. It has some comedy, a fun plot, and maybe even some romance. THE MUSIC MAN is filled with all of that and so much more!

Take a journey to River City, Iowa with “Professor” Harold Hill. Harold is a con man who travels from city to city, tricking naïve citizens into thinking he is a boys’ band organizer and leader. He convinces them to buy instruments and uniforms for their children, ensuring them that the band will help save the youth from whatever may be ailing the town. Marian, the librarian and piano teacher, sees right through his tricks and is very unimpressed by his attempts to woo her. Can Harold win over Marian and the town? Or will he finally be caught in his lies?

Having seen the play, I understand why it is such a beloved classic. Everything about the musical, from the storyline to the sets, is charming. The sets instantly transported me to the early 1900’s and everything was perfectly set up to make me feel like I was in a quiet little town. As someone who grew up in a small town, all of the characters were spot on. Most of the townspeople are easily persuaded, they want to keep their town safe, and they have a little bit of a gossip streak. This all combines to make hilarious and uplifting moments throughout the show.

Speaking of charming, James Snyder, who portrayed Harold Hill, could teach a class in the subject. He did a phenomenal job depicting Harold as smooth and charming so much so that, even with knowing he is a con man, I was still rooting for him to win in the end. Of course, I can’t mention James without also discussing Julia Udine, who played Marian Paroo. Marian is a fantastic character as she is smart, strong-willed, and wants to take care of her family. Julia displayed all of these characteristics, while also giving Marian a beautiful soft side seen in more private moments throughout the show. There is instant chemistry between the two when they first meet and as they slowly start to fall in love, my heart was completely a flutter.

THE MUSIC MAN is a feel good and heartwarming musical that will make sure you make today worth remembering. But don’t wait till the train is departing! Join the band now through July 16 at the UC Davis Health Pavilion. Learn more here.
