Under the direction of Lily Tanner, actors and designers will work together to create a new piece of theatre based on the concepts and imagery present in the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot deck. The iconic RWS deck was created in 1909 and is the foundation for modern tarot. Each tarot card holds a destination and an opportunity for growth - these will be the jumping off points for creating character, conflict, and plot. The title, As Above, So Below, refers to the occultist idea that phenomena are mirrored across different planes of existence - the heavens reflect the earth, the individual reflects society, the body reflects the emotions, and so on. Throughout the rehearsal process, the group will look for opportunities to incorporate this theme into the finished play.

Please bring a resume and headshot or photo of yourself and come dressed to move. No other materials are needed.

NOTE: All cast members must be vaccinated and we will be wearing masks during auditions and rehearsals.

Auditions will be held on January 22 & 23 from 2pm-4pm. Those auditioning only need to attend one audition date.

All auditions and rehearsals will be at Empire Arts Collective (2791 24th St Room 13, Sacramento, CA 95818).

Rehearsals will start on February 1st, with rehearsals on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 7pm-9pm and Saturdays from 10am-1pm (tech week exception: there will be a rehearsal on Tuesday, April 19th and rehearsals on the week of April 19th will last from 7pm to 10pm).

Performances will be on April 22nd, 23rd, 29th, and 30th (times TBD).

What is Devised Theatre?

Devising is a theatre practice in which the director, cast, and designers work together to create a play during rehearsal, rather than start with a script. Lily will lead the company of devisers through the creative process. No prior experience (with performance, devising, or tarot) is necessary; Lily is looking for collaborators who want to try new things wholeheartedly, are unafraid to be silly, are uplifting to their fellow collaborators, and are able to receive constructive feedback with grace. Devising, and all theatremaking, is a constructive learning practice, so you are probably a good candidate even if you have no experience and you just actively want to develop your performance skills and ability to work creatively with others. Devising is an incredibly empowering practice for collaborative creation and tarot is an incredibly empowering practice for self-reflection, so by participating in this project, you will not only have a ton of fun with other cool people, you will gain confidence and insight.
If any of this sounds interesting to you, please come to auditions. The audition will be structured similar to a typical rehearsal, so that way you can see how the devising process works and we can see how you work in a group setting.
