Sacramento Taiko Dan

Sacramento Taiko Dan is dedicated to the study, preservation and promotion of traditional and contemporary styles of Taiko drumming, a Japanese style of percussion that combines music, movement and spirit.

Sacramento Taiko Dan is the premiere Japanese drumming ensemble in the greater Sacramento region. Founded in 1989, they are a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization. Performers include community members and an international touring performance team. The combination of renowned drummers and outstanding drums enables Sacramento Taiko Dan to provide audiences with world-class entertainment.

Sacramento Taiko Dan seeks to:
-Promote cultural awareness and diversity
-Continue the traditional styles while developing new forms
-Educate new and existing students from diverse backgrounds
-Provide top level performances in a wide variety of venues

Sacramento Taiko Dan tours nationally and internationally, with annual appearances at the California State Fair, San Francisco Cherry Blossom Festival, Sacramento Pacific Rim Festival, International Taiko Festival, and at UC Berkeley’s Zellerbach Hall. They have collaborated with several artists and arts organizations including the Sacramento Ballet, Sacramento Symphony, Camellia Symphony, and poet Julia Conner.

Assembly #1: Japanese Drumming with Sacramento Taiko Dan

Program description

This assembly introduces students to Taiko. Students interact through call-outs (in Japanese), clapping rhythm patterns, and playing the drums on stage.
