5th Annual Fiesta de Frida

5th Annual Fiesta de Frida

Presented by Latino Center of Art and Culture at Latino Center of Art and Culture

The Latino Center of Art and Culture is pleased to announce the 5th Annual ¡Fiesta de Frida! This popular free event is a day to honor the legendary Mexican artist Frida Kahlo and celebrate not only her work but also her iconic status for girls/women empowerment.

The hugely-popular centerpiece activity of the afternoon is the Frida Kahlo look-a-like contest. This event will also feature art workshops, and from the Crocker Art Museum, there will be a takeaway art activity called Repujado (Push Design). The push design is inspired by Mexican Metal artisans. It’s created using aluminum and wooden tools to raise the desired design. Whoever is creating it can decide on the design from simple flowers to their names. (It would be a project for children 6 and up.) There will also be local craft vendors including John Huerta, Teresa Lerma-Gracia, Gabriela Torres, Maggie Gomez-Devos, and Nancy Garcia from Kultura. The Little Frida Children’s Parade will be a part of the festivities.

In addition, authentic Mexican food and drink, beer and wine will be served. Dancers from Mike Del Campo Dance School, and cumbia performers, La Diferencia Por Siempre, will be in attendance! The Sacramento River Cats street team will be on hand with their games booth and info on their new spring/summer Latino outreach program promoting the Derados de Sacramento.

This event is dedicated to San Francisco Artist, René Yañez. His contributions to art, the Chicano Movement, the San Francisco Mission District and to Chicano history is unmatched. He co-founded La Galeria de La Raza located at 24th and Bryant Streets in San Francisco. The thousands of people he touched across his life is incalculable, but the regard we have for him tells an enormous amount about who he was and what effect he had on us.
