Stories on Stage Sacramento is thrilled to present two extraordinary writers at its August event: Tommy Orange and Vanessa Hua. Tommy Orange's debut novel, There There, a polyphonic telling of the lives of twelve urban Native American characters on one fateful day, was published in June and is a New York Times bestseller, and has garnered superlatives from The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Washington Post, Kirkus Reviews, and many, many others: it's an Amazon Best Book of the Year: Entertainment Weekly calls it "the year's most galvanizing debut novel." Tommy Orange grew up in Oakland and lives in Angels Camp. Vanessa Hua’s powerful debut novel, A River of Stars, will be published August 14, but it’s already gathering honors: the online literary site The Millions named it one of their most anticipated books of 2018, and it was selected by August LibraryReads as a Top 10 new release. A modern story of motherhood, immigration, and identity, A River of Stars follows a pregnant Chinese woman as she makes her way to California and a stake in the American dream. Vanessa Hua is a columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle.
Selected excerpts from both novels will be read by actors. Copies of both books will be for sale, and both authors will be present to sign your copy.
