On March 25, 1911, a fire swept through the eighth, ninth, and tenth floors of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in New York City. Thirty minutes later, the fire was under control, but 146 people, mainly young immigrant girls, had died. The fire, and the trial that followed, was a pivotal in the labor movement and creating workers safety regulations.
Using eyewitness accounts, court transcripts, newspaper headlines and other archival material, this play creates a dramatic moment-by-moment account of this historic fire and the social upheaval that followed. By using real words spoken by real people, from Ukrainian seamstresses to millionaire Fifth Avenue socialites The Triangle Factory Fire Project explores a tragic fire, the power structures that lit the match, and the explosive impacts that reverberate today
