When We Were Colored, by Eva Rutland, tells the story of one family’s experience with integration in post-World War II Sacramento. When a woman moves to California from the south with her husband and children, the family must confront with it’s like to be the first black household on the block, the only black children at school and how to continue to love those with different ideologies.
Ginger Rutland has written a play based on her mother’s book that will have its premiere at the Sacramento Theater Company on March 20. Join Ginger for a special reading and discussion of the book and the play.
