Hearing Miles: The Life, Times, and Music of Miles Davis

Presented by The Library of MusicLandria at The Library of MusicLandria

Don't miss this special encore presentation of Jimi's guided listening session featuring the music of Miles Davis!

Curious about one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century? From his time at Juilliard and the symphonic orchestration of 1949's Birth of the Cool to his Grammy-winning but controversial pop-influenced recordings of the 1980s, Miles Davis' life both reflected and drove American music for over four decades. Join Sacramento-based musicologist Jimi Michiel for a guided listening session and in-depth discussion as we explore the life and work of one of America's great artists.

Jimi Michiel is a Sacramento-based musicologist and trumpet player. He has performed with a wide variety of ensembles around the country, including the New York String Orchestra, Hot Springs Festival Orchestra and the Brandeis New Music Ensemble. As a writer, he has written program notes for the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Bloomington Symphony Orchestra, and chamber concerts including members of most major American orchestras (Boston Symphony, Chicago Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, etc). His scholarship on the early life of Miles Davis has been recognized by the American Musicological Society and the International Association of Jazz Educators. Jimi holds a degree in trumpet performance from the Interlochen Arts Academy and degrees in music history and trumpet performance from the New England Conservatory.
