Pochoir Monotype is a variation of monotype using stencils to build layered images. Monotype printmaking can be daunting. By adding Pochoir Stencil Art to Monotype, artists can easily produce prints with layered color and amazing unpredictable patterns. Pochoir Monotype begins with the designing and cutting of stencils. Stencil forms can be simple or complex. Students may also use found stencil shapes; such as leaves and other organic material. Stencils are inked and layered face up on the inky mono plate. The first print is graphic and straightforward. Flipping, layering and re-inking the stencils and plate create the exciting second and subsequent prints. Pochoir Monotype is perfect for creating a series of prints or body of work because of the prints relational quality. Students are asked to bring ideas for stencil/shapes, and organic materials such as leaves. All tools and materials for this workshop are provided; including BFK paper, mono plate, ink, brayers, modifiers and materials for making stencils. Instructor will have student examples to share. All levels are welcome. Please bring a lunch.

Ruth Santee is a California-based artist whose work has been exhibited in museum, non-profit, and gallery venues. She received a BFA from the College of Santa Fe, NM and an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. Santee is a recipient of the Cadogan Fellowship Award from the San Francisco Foundation and a recipient of a commission from the San Francisco Arts Commission. Santee’s work is in the permanent collection of the University of Oregon and the David Brower Center, Berkeley. In addition to her studio practice and exhibition record, Santee is the director and co/owner of Transmission Gallery in Oakland. Transmission Gallery is a contemporary gallery located in the heart of the Oakland art scene that exhibits work by local and regional artists. Transmission Gallery is a member of the Oakland Art Murmur and SF Art Dealers Association. Santee has also been influential in Fine Art Education. She has taught at the California College of Art Extended Ed Program, UC Davis, Saint Mary’s College, and Bakersfield College. Currently she is a tenured professor at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton CA. where she teaches printmaking, 2D Design and Color Theory.
