Sleepy LaBeef became the ultimate rockabilly survivor, his live performances retaining the same raw power as he approached his eighth decade that they had in the years when he was among the music’s pioneers. An Arkansas-born, Texas-bred musical road warrior, Sleepy LaBeef recorded for Sun Records and Starday Record in the 1950s.
In the 1980s, Rounder Records signed him -- he has been playing gigs all across America and overseas for more than 55 years, and at 79 years old his powers are undiminished. LaBeef’s music crosses all borders of American roots music from rockabilly to gospel, country, blues, and more. Standing 6’7” with a rumbling basso-profundo voice and driving electric guitar style, a very recent documentary Sleepy LaBeef Rides Again brings his history to the forefront of Americana music.
