Behind the Barre: Sensory Friendly Dance Performance

Behind the Barre: Sensory Friendly Dance Performance

Presented by Capital Dance Project at The Sofia Tsakopoulos Center for the Arts

Capital Dance Project is thrilled to present two Sensory Friendly Dance Performances at The Sofia. Join for this inclusive live dance performance and delight in the power of dance to bring our community together in a climate of acceptance and understanding.

CDP's Sensory Friendly Dance Performances are designed to make everyone, particularly individuals with autism or other developmental disabilities, feel comfortable, accepted, and safe in a theater environment. Traditional theater rules are relaxed and audience members are welcome to express themselves by getting up, playing with toys, dancing, talking, or singing. CDP will create an environment for families to experience a live dance performance and enjoy quality time without having to worry if someone will complain or be disturbed. This performance is a great opportunity for families to meet, siblings of children with autism to get to know other kids, and individuals with related sensory disabilities to connect with the Sacramento community.

Each one-hour event will feature a 30 minute dance performance by the Capital Dance Project artists, coloring activities, a chance to meet and interact with the dancers, and a safe space filled with sensory friendly items such as bean bag chairs, fidget toys, and noise-cancelling headphones. Behavior therapists and volunteers will be on hand to help everyone feel comfortable in the theater, and CDP will foster a "no sorry zone" where everyone is accepted just as they are.
