While a significant number of jazz purist might argue that the Great American Songbook does not include “jazz standards,” no one can deny songs written by Duke Ellington, the Gershwin’s, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, Irving Berlin, Harry Warren, Walter Donaldson, Jimmy Van Huesen, Sammy Cahn, Fats Waller, Eubie Blake, Louis Armstrong, and hordes of others have been performed by virtually every jazz musician local and abroad. Whether it was the thousands of songs, or just the songwriters of the time who knew one another, playing and working together in Tin Pan Alley, Harlem, Broadway, and Hollywood, the genre, often referred to as American Classical has been around since the 1920s. 100 years strong, the Sacramento Jazz Coop showcases “That Old Feeling, One Hundred Years of the Great American Songbook.”
