Carlos Luis Olivas, Jr.: New Wings 2013-2019

Presented by Alzheimer's Association Northern California and Northern Nevada at The Atrium

It is a pleasure to present the exhibit, Carlos Luis Olívas, Jr.: New Wings, 2013-2019. This exhibition features the work of Sacramento artist Carlos Luis Olívas, Jr. Carlos currently navigates his creative production through the Alzheimer experience, an experience shared by other artists such as Willem De Kooning, Pablo Piccaso, Marc Chagall, Claude Monet and Salvador Dalí.

The Alzheimer experience increasingly demands operating in the present––an aperture already familiar to many artists. This experience also insists that others, in the life of an Alzheimer family member, also become comfortable residing in the present. It can be its own gift. Having created art most of his life, Carlos is at home and empowered when generating new work. While Mr. Olívas has been producing art since the early 1960s, this exhibit shares examples of his creative production during the period when signs of Alzheimer first began to appear in 2013, to his current 2019 arts production.

A sculptor and two-dimensional artist, Carlos Luis Olívas, Jr. has long since been comfortable moving back and forth between figurative, representational images and highly conceptual abstracted work.

Since 1973, Carlos has been linked to the Sacramento Royal Chicano Air Force, RCAF (a renowned artist collective). Carlos has created art most of his life and is energized when creating. He is an artist with changing sensors, new wings, just as any artist of consequence engaged in the creative process.
