California’s agricultural fields and orchards -- particularly when observed from an aerial perspective -- can reveal textures, patterns, and rhythms that are not as readily apparent at ground level. Stein’s paintings are mostly about his interpretations and manipulations of those textures, patterns, and rhythms to create on a two-dimensional canvas what can be seen in life. To achieve this, he uses a careful compositional layout, a particular choice of colors, some math, thickened paint, and a selection of certain tools to create the final image. His work is in both public and private collections and has been exhibited in various Sacramento Valley and North Coast locations.
