Indigenous Voices in Film: "Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked the World"

Presented by Crocker Art Museum at Crocker Art Museum

Celebrate Native American Heritage Month with the award-winning documentary, Rumble, which details Native American contributions to rock and roll music. Through captivating performances and eye-opening interviews with a who’s-who list of music legends, including Steven Tyler, Slash, Tony Bennett, Steven Van Zandt, and many more, Rumble uncovers the until-now unknown history of how indigenous music and musicians help shape the soundtrack of American popular culture. Rumble will be screened with the short film Jaaji Approx., a dreamy contemplation of the filmmaker’s relationship with his father, told through beautiful shots of landscape and recordings of the father speaking in his native Ho-Chunk language.

To honor the exhibitions Pueblo Dynasties: Master Potters from Matriarchs to Contemporaries and When I Remember, I See Red: American Indian Art and Activism in California, the Crocker presents a film series that celebrates the contributions of indigenous peoples through film. Curated by Maya Austin (Pascua Yaqui/Blackfeet/Chicana), formerly of the Sundance Institute, this series offers three diverse films, each preceded by a short film and introduction by Austin. An audience discussion will follow each screening.
