During the early twentieth century, abstract art started out as a visual response and meditation on modernism.
Later, at the advent of the post-modern era, when artists sought to challenge the ideology of modern aesthetics, abstract art served as a means to comment on the [post-war] socio-political climate of the time.
As time progressed, the poetic, intuitive, and spiritual elements of abstraction began to emerge.
Many movements and artistic pursuits have sprung forth from the initial innovations associated with abstract art, and artists in the twenty-first century continue to cull its history in an effort to find new approaches toward self-expression.
