In recognition of Women’s History Month, the Crocker, in partnership with Cine Soul, will screen Claudine to commemorate the life and work of Diahann Carroll, who received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress for her role as a single mother of six, courted by Roop (James Earl Jones), a garbage collector intimidated by fatherhood.
A comedy/drama/romance, Claudine takes place amidst a backdrop of structural poverty, racial tensions and gender discrimination. Directed by the blacklisted John Berry, Claudine features an amazing score and soundtrack by Curtis Mayfield with vocals by Gladys Knight and the Pips.
A conversation about black female representation in cinematic arts, led by Sacramento State Assistant Professor Michele Foss-Snowden, will follow the screening.
