The Official Rogue Book Club

Presented by Crocker Art Museum at Online/Virtual Space

Join the Crocker Art Museum for the next meeting of the Official Rogue Book Club! Each month, readers, art-lovers, and special guests gather together to share and discuss books that inspire us to look at art and life in new and unexpected ways. This month, we're taking on An American Marriage: A Novel by Tayari Jones, a 2018 Oprah Book Club Selection.

In the book, newlywed Celestial and Roy embody both the American Dream and the New South. Roy is a young executive and Celestial is an artist on the brink of an exciting career. As they began settling into their life together, they are ripped apart by circumstances neither could have imagined. A deeply insightful look into the hearts and minds of three people who are at once bound and separated by forces beyond their control, An American Marriage has been described as “masterpiece of storytelling". Former president Barack Obama called it "a moving portrayal of the effects of a wrongful conviction on a young African-American couple". The New York Times echoed that sentiment, praising its inclusion of "the everyday poetry of the African-American community that begs to be heard". The stirring tale will inspire a look at love stories represented in the Crocker’s collection and conversations about the main character's call to “reckon with the past while moving forward, with hope and pain, into the future” — a fitting theme for our current times.
