Often undervalued, collage and assemblage are dynamic media that create conversations between old and new, past and present, similar and varied. Inspired by the works of Alison and Betye Saar, this workshop focuses on transforming objects and images through fragmenting, combining, and recontextualizing them. Participants should bring personal items, such as photos, magazine clippings, product labels, and maps to use in their collage. Additional supplies and materials will be provided.

Instructor Daphne Burgess is an African American artist from Sacramento whose work has been shown in galleries and museums, including the Brickhouse Art Gallery; Sojourner Truth African Heritage Museum; California State University, Sacramento; Crocker Art Museum; and the African American Museum and Library at Oakland. Her background is layered with art practice, community service, and a commitment to increasing access to creative experiences. Burgess now lives in Alabama, where she operates Gallery 157, with the goal of increasing access to art experiences through exhibitions, workshops and collaboration.
