Art on Film: Miss Hokusai

Art on Film: Miss Hokusai

Presented by Crocker Art Museum at Crocker Art Museum

Join the Crocker for an in-person screening of the lauded 2016 film Miss Hokusai, which aligns with the exhibitions Monet to Matisse: Masterworks of French Impressionism from the Dixon Gallery and Gardens and Hands and Earth: Contemporary Japanese Ceramics.

Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai is widely considered one of the celebrated masters of art, and is particularly well-known for his world famous "The Great Wave." Hokusai's work deeply influenced Degas, Monet, and other Impressionists featured in Monet to Matisse.

Based on the original manga series and told from the perspective of Hokusai’s daughter Katsushika Ōi, the film “illuminates the life and creative legacy of its brilliant subject with a beautifully animated biopic whose absorbing visuals are matched by its narrative grace” (Rotten Tomatoes).

The program includes a guided tour of Monet to Matisse and Hands and Earth to explore the influences of Japanese art on Impressionism and art today.
