From the dignified politician to the down-and-out chicken thief, the colorful characters that populated the city of Sacramento are documented as they posed before the photographers lens. During the last half of the 19th century, when still very new, photography emerged as a commercial art that today provides guests with a mirror into the past and allows them to glimpse actual moments in time. Without the use of paint and canvas, it also represented the first time in history that average citizens could have their portrait taken for their friends and family to enjoy.
