The construction industry is one of the nation’s (and world’s) largest industries. In 2021, construction accounted for over 4.1 percent of the US gross domestic product*, ranking ahead of agriculture, mining, transportation, arts/entertainment, and even national defense spending! Despite more than 90 percent of US general contractors listing labor shortages as a concern**, women comprise only 10.3 percent*** of those working in the built environment – and that number shrinks for the skilled trades. With unprecedented labor shortages, we must determine what changes are needed to ensure an equitable and inclusive industry. While titled the Women in Construction Conference, this is a conference for men, women, and those who want to make change.
