Estampas de la Raza

Estampas de la Raza

Presented by Crocker Art Museum at Crocker Art Museum

Estampas de la Raza, drawn from the McNay Art Museum’s collection of prints, is a survey of Latino artists’ contributions to post-1960 American printmaking. Gifted to the McNay by collectors Harriett and Ricardo Romo, the works in the exhibition focus on five themes: (one) Identity, (two) Struggle, (three) Tradition, Culture, Memory, (four) Icons, and (five) Other Voices.

The exhibition also raises awareness of three highly influential print shops — Self Help Graphics and Art (SHG) and
Modern Multiples in Los Angeles, and Coronado Studio in Austin, Texas. These shops have not only introduced a previously underserved audience to printmaking but have also been central to the creativity and cultural awareness of their respective Chicano and Latino communities.

In Sacramento, the exhibition will incorporate prints from the Crocker Art Museum’s permanent collection by members of the Royal Chicano Air Force (RCAF). Artists include Juan Carrillo, Juan Cervantes, Enrique Chagoya, Armando R. Cid, Rudy Cuellar, Ricardo Favela, Louie Gonzalez, Irma C. Lerma-Barbosa, Ralph Maradiaga, José Montoya, José Clemente Orozco, Juanishi Orosco, Stan Padilla, David Alfaro Siqueiros, and Esteban Villa.
