A Pastorela in Sacramento

Presented by Latino Center of Art and Culture at Latino Center of Art and Culture

The Latino Center of Art and Culture presents the Ninth Annual A Pastorela in Sacramento, a popular and festive holiday play for children and their families. This Pastorela is theater mixed with cultural traditions sure to get everyone in the holiday spirit.

A Pastorela in Sacramento is a modern play of Mexico’s traditional Christmas pageant. It is satirical, poignant, moralistic, sly, and romantic, with contemporary and timeless subject matter drawing directly from current affairs in the best tradition of magical realism and theater for the spirit of the season.

This year, the Latino Center of Art and Culture is bringing the Pastorela back to the community, reviving the original 2014 script.  The story includes  recognizable figures such as the four "shepherds.” The characters Derechos, a young law school graduate racked with debt; Falsita, a Sacramento-born former Hollywood starlet who lost everything when she refused to sleep with her producer; Campos, an overworked school teacher, and Esperanza, a young activist and hopeful community organizer,  face their moral dilemmas. They have to work together to help a homeless family (Mary and Joseph characters)  save the world from “fire, famine and pestilence”. The finale is a dramatic battle of good VS. evil, that typically has audiences erupting into boos, cheers and songs.
