Hot and Cold: Wax Artists of California celebrates encaustic work, one of the oldest artistic mediums in the world dating as far back as 5th century BC. Today, contemporary artists are pushing the boundaries of this historical medium and creating exciting and masterful works far beyond encaustic’s original artistic origins. This exhibition is presented in partnership with Sierra Wax Artists, honoring the history of a club that has drawn together wax artists from Northern California for over 25 years.

Nancy Youdelman on being a juror for Hot and Cold 2023:

“Serving as juror for this exhibition was a delightful experience. The excellence and variety of technique and the strong visual command of the submitted work is what impressed me most. I spent many hours looking carefully at everything while making my choices before finally selecting the prize winners. It was not easy, because there were so many stunning works.”

The international contemporary art dialog is overwhelmingly dominated by voices from the U.S., Western Europe, and Asia. Aiming to address the deficit of contemporary African art in the mainstream art world, Duality: An African Diasporic Narrative showcases contemporary Ghanaian artists Teddy Osei and Glover Marfo, whose work explores the delicate balance and tensions between the traditional and contemporary culture of Ghana and the Western world while borrowing from traditional African and contemporary cross cultural aesthetic languages.

Captured by the colors and textures of nature at a young age, Realm, a solo show by LeAnne Brook, explores the natural world through intuitive movement and memory. Recalling specific landscapes, Brook’s work marries evocative color shifts, evolving fluid lines, realism and abstraction, revealing an unbridled passion for the unpredictability of nature.

Mark your calendars to check out the artwork, mingle with the artists, and enjoy beer, wine, and soft drinks, and good company!

Artist Lectures featuring Teddy Osei, Glover Marfo, and LeeAnn Brook will take place.
