April Open Garden

Presented by UCCE Master Gardeners of Sacramento County at Fair Oaks Horticulture Center

UC Master Gardeners of Sacramento County present April Open Garden.

For gardeners there is no better time than Spring to get inspired and tap into some practical and scientific know how. Join Sacramento’s UC Master Gardeners to view new and established plantings and get locally-relevant answers to your gardening questions.

Here is a small sampling of what’s happening in the garden in April. Master Gardeners in each section are available to discuss these activities and more.

New Loganberries and Babycake raspberries are joining the berry garden. International culinary herb beds are making room for new annuals amidst the turmeric, crocuses and edible flowers like calendula and Johnny jump ups. Vegetable beds are being cleared of cover crops and revitalized with compost and fertilizer. As the soil warms All American Selections of tomatoes, flowers and vegetables will be planted. As citrus harvest concludes, trees are being fertilized and pruned. Other sections of the orchard are being prepared for new trees including some in containers. Subtropical varieties are being tried as climate change is anticipated in Sacramento.

Have a specific garden question that is vexing you? Feel free to bring bagged samples of plants or pests to the Ask a Master Gardener table.
