Electricidad

Electricidad

Presented by Teatro Espejo at Unknown

As part of its 40 year anniversary of serving Sacramento audiences with culturally relevant Chicano/Latino plays as well as works that reflect important issues affecting our community, El Teatro Espejo is producing, Electricidad by Luis Alfaro. This incredible work is adapted from the popular Greek classic, Electra by Euripides. Alfaro's adaptation takes audiences to "cholo-landia" where the East Los Locos are mourning the death of their leader, "El Auggie." "La Electricidad," his daughter, stands guard (a la Electra) over his body swearing vengeance of his death by her mother, Clemencia.

However, Electricidad is deeper than just a contemporary adaptation of the Greek classic. The powerfully poetic work attacks the violence taking place over generations, between groups who would have more to gain by working together; ill-place loyalties; the passion of revenge being mistaken for an expression of love; the inability to forgive dooming future generations to more of the same-these themes are played out in ghettos, over borders, on desert sands, between families, and even within families. The tragic results are seen in the pages of every newspaper.
