The Office of Arts and Culture (OAC) was established in 1977 by a City and County Ordinance.

OAC is a public agency devoted to supporting, promoting and advancing the arts in the region.  Funded by the Sacramento City and County, OAC provides funding to local artists and arts groups; promotes the arts through marketing, outreach and education initiatives; provides resources to support and increase regional arts education activities; and serves as a community partner and resource.

In a move that underscores the City of Sacramento’s ongoing support of its local creative community, the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission (SMAC) has been renamed the Office of Arts and Culture. The Office of Arts and Culture and its staff (formerly known as part of SMAC) is housed in the Convention and Cultural Services Department and is dedicated to supporting, promoting and advancing the arts throughout Sacramento. Renaming the office from the commission helps distinguish between the City’s administrative staff that run day-to-day operations from the public advisory committee. The office’s core programs include Arts Education, Grants and Cultural Programs, Art in Public Places, and is home to the new Office of Film and Media.
