916 Ink Virtual Creative Writing Workshop

Virtual Workshop Overview: Students will enter a virtual world of storytelling and imagination where they will explore a world designed to excite and inspire their creative resources. After a brief orientation about 916 Ink and our workshop writing method, students will embark on a journey through the creative process, using our Hero’s Journey storytelling curriculum as a guide to create their own narrative or personal story. First students will collaborate to learn the elements of story using a group creative writing prompt encouraging them to write a piece of fiction together. Students will have the opportunity to share their contribution to a final group story with their peers in a positive environment, free of criticism. During the second portion of the workshop, students will take the elements of good storytelling that they have practiced and use them to create their own Hero’s Journey narrative. With the aid of the 916 Ink Wordslingers and Inspirators (volunteer writers), students will have the opportunity to revise their work making creative choices about the flow, feel and final version of their writing. Each writing prompts is accompanied by a grade-level appropriate reading sample we call a “Spark” that can inspire students or lead to discuss about writing techniques that students may want to use. Teachers will be present but not required to participate during the workshop unless students are not adhering to expected classroom norms and behaviors.

Alexis Firsty Residency

Residency Description: Artists, writers, and scientists are all observers of the world around us. In this residency, students will become all three by making an original book that will contain a series of creative interpretations of natural forms found in their surroundings. Alexis Firsty, artist and CA credentialed art educator, will lead this cross-disciplinary residency by guiding students to make connections between subjects while expressing their own unique creative voice.

Assembly #1: Japanese Drumming with Sacramento Taiko Dan

This assembly introduces students to Taiko. Students interact through call-outs (in Japanese), clapping rhythm patterns, and playing the drums on stage.

Assembly #1: Japanese Drumming, Folk Music, & Dance

Japanese folk songs will be played on traditional instruments and performers will demonstrate how the movements in the folk dances tell stories of what life was like for the Japanese people at the time. Students will learn simple hand movements of a dance that they will do along with the performers. These Japanese traditional movements will be made relevant to the students’ current lives when we create a new folk dance with movements that reflect their own lives culminating in an exciting performance of a traditional and modern fusion piece with students drumming and dancing together onstage.

Assembly #2: Japanese Drumming & Folktale Fun!

This exciting new assembly offering combines Japanese taiko drumming with classic Japanese drum-related folktales. Students will see performances using different kinds of taiko and other traditional instruments seamlessly interwoven between fun interactive folktales. Everyone learns how to play the taiko and some are chosen to join us onstage for the final drumming finale.

Assembly #2: Persistence Pays Off: Teaching the Value of Persistence Through Japanese Drumming

This assembly emphasizes that practice and persistence are the keys to becoming great at whatever you do. Only offered to schools that have previously had a Taiko Dan assembly.

Inspired by topics toed directly to curriculum—History! Science! Math! Literature!—OR the hysterical whimsy of the imagination, this buffet of student- written plays is a surefire hit with all ages!

Blues In The Schools

Any Given Child ; In-School Performance/Assembly

Sacramento Blues Society's Blues in the Schools (BITS) program provides special opportunities to educate and mentor students in the historical significance of the Blues and its impact on American and World culture and music. In an interactive lecture format interspersed with live performance, local Sacramento professional musicians inform students about Blues music history, song structure, how to put feelings into lyrics and song, and how instruments play together to effectively communicate the Blues. Students sing along, play egg shakers, and ask questions of the band. If the school has a music program, students may get on stage to "jam". Our program can layer knowledge to emphasize middle school educational goals as well as elementary school arts development. BITS Assemblies are an excellent opportunity for schools with or without music instrument instruction. Two same day performances are also available.

Calidanza Performance

Any Given Child ; In-School Performance/Assembly

Calidanza is a dynamic Mexican folk dance company that fuses contemporary technique with traditional folk dance to tell compelling stories of the rich cultural traditions in Mexico. In this lively and energetic performance, students will be introduced to traditional Mexican folk and contemporary dance accompanied by valuable information regarding the dances and the reasons behind the traditions. Students will also learn about the distinctive cultural regions of Mexico through dance, music, and lavish, colorful costumes. There is also an interactive component to the performance where some lucky children will learn a dance step while the rest of the students create rhythmic sound. Full of energy, tradition, colors, and fun, this show is a must-have for schools!

Ceramics and Murals at Sutter’s Landing Skate Park

Community Programs

Joel will work with the community of skaters at the Park to develop ideas for and create new murals to enliven the interior of the Skate Park. He will also work with youth to design tee shirts and branded material specifically for the Park.

Crystal Ruiz

After School Programs ; Any Given Child ; In-School Residency

Crystal Ruiz had a degree in Art Education with an emphasis in Studio Art from CSU Sacramento. She is a visual artist who has experience working with various mediums and her art practice is primarily in sculpture. Her sculptures are a combination of metal, muslin, and charcoal. Crystal has experience making 2D work, which is a mix of drawings, paintings, and collages that focus on various subjects. Crystal's has teaching experience working with K-8 and works as an Educator for the Crocker Art Museum. She works for the School and Teacher Programs for the Education Department and has come to integrate the arts to all subjects. When she is not in the musuem given tours or workshops, she is bringing art to the classroom. Crystal's enthusiasm brings a wide imagination to the students minds and allows them to be creative in any classroom setting. She has served a diverse community and with her knowledge and skills for the arts, it has allowed her to serve various Sacramento communities and raise awareness to the arts.

Cynthia Speakman

After School Programs ; Any Given Child ; Summer Camp

Cynthia Speakman has been an actor and performer in Sacramento since 1993. She has performed on numerous stages and for 10 years was a member of the StoryVoices ensemble. Speakman, who holds a B.S. in Elementary and Special Education, founded the OnStage Theatre Arts program at Leonardo da Vinci School in 2000. OnStage, an afterschool program where the plays are written with the students, is now at several schools and provides summer camps for kids age 5-14. Since 2005 she has worked with the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission in the Any Given Child program in the Twin Rivers , Robla and Sacramento City School Districts and with the Model Arts Program for Robla School District. Additionally, Cynthia has participated in various teaching artist workshops offered through the Kennedy Center and SMAC. She uses improv and storytelling to guide children in re-discovering their creativity and learning about theatre arts.

Environmental Art at Sojourner Truth Community Garden

Community Programs

Jane Allen Ingram sets up a working papermaking studio and works with people in the community to design an art installation that suits the place and time and with suggestions and sketches from the community participants. She will work with the gardeners at Sojourner Truth Community Garden to choose the flower seeds to use in the art project according to the colors and type of wildflowers that will be easy to grow in this place and get advice from the local gardeners about growing conditions and requirements.

Fenix Drum and Dance Performance

Fenix Drum and Dance multi-faceted programs of music, dance and storytelling are interactive and promote ideas of the importance of education and respect toward others. The company specializes in traditional arts of West Africa and the African Diaspora. With an abundance of musical instruments and costumes, up to 50 students and teachers get an opportunity to join the presenters on stage while others participate from the audience. Fenix hones its presentations to serve the needs of diverse school populations.

Gail Dartez

After School Programs ; Any Given Child ; In-School Residency

Gail Dartez has more than 30 years experience as a professional actor, director, and theatre arts educator. She has been a teaching artist for the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission since 2006, conducting numerous K - 8 residencies in area schools. Currently Gail is an Adjunct Professor of Theatre in the Los Rios Community College District, teaching a variety of theatre courses and directing numerous productions over the past several years. Gail is also a teaching artist for Capital Stage and directed The Arsonists for the company in Spring of 2018. She has served as an instructor and director for California Musical Theatre workshops, camps, and Music Circus Junior Company. Gail has also taught master classes and directed productions for the Young Professional Conservatory at Sacramento Theatre Company. Gail holds an MFA in Acting from the Yale School of Drama and was awarded Arts Educator of the Year by the Sacramento Arts and Business Council in 2008.

Heidi McLean

After School Programs ; Any Given Child ; In-School Residency

Heidi McLean was introduced to dance in an after school program in the third grade. She owes her dance and teaching career to Rachel Bachrach, who taught 1st - 4th grade at a two room school in Camptonville, CA. Those dance classes led to ballet classes and performances, which in turn led to studying, performing, and teaching ethnic dances from Russia, Ukraine, Mexico, Spain, and parts of Latin America. During and after attending San Francisco State University (Bachelor of Arts in Drama 1978) Heidi performed throughout the United States with the Massenkoff Russian Folk Festival, and Neva Russian Dance Ensemble. In the greater San Francisco Bay Area she performed and participated in lecture demonstrations (Trujillo Dance Company, El Colectivo de Danza Hispana, and Grupo El Salvador), taught Mexican folk dance at the San Francisco Mission Cultural Center, and choreographed musicals for Riordan High School. Heidi has been involved with arts integration since 2007 and loves helping students explore non-verbal communication through movement. In her residencies she emphasizes teamwork, respect for the ideas of others, safety, and trying out new approaches to problem solving. (She's a big fan of the motto, "Keep what works and discard the rest!") She is delighted when classroom teachers want to integrate dance with subjects like geometry, science (the solar system, environmental adaptations, geological processes), English language arts, and California History. Heidi creates a safe environment that allows students to explore both simple and challenging movements, and to collaborate with their peers to create dances that showcase their creativity and learning.

Community Programs

J Ross will partner with the Oak Park Community Center, offering much needed programming for teens and adults that offers opportunity not only for self-expression but also leadership and community building skills.

Homemade Music (math and measurement)

Any Given Child ; In-School Performance/Assembly

In Homemade Music, Phil demonstrates all of his wacky homemade instruments, and shows the students how to transform common household items into musical marvels using math and measurement! Phil features straw oboes, sprinkler pipe panflutes, and water bottle xylophones, along with his online follow up activities. Before the presentation, please have on hand: an empty soda can, or an empty water bottle. This will be used to make a homemade shaker to play rhythm games together during the program!

Journey through the Mind (mindfulness, brain science, social/emotional skills & music)

Any Given Child ; In-School Performance/Assembly

In Journey through the Mind, Phil begins with an entertaining musical exploration of the brain, focusing on vision, hearing, emotions, memory, and movement. Then he leads the kids through a series of fun activities on imagination, patterns, and memory games. Throughout the program, Phil shows the students his mindfulness breathing exercises for emotional balance, focused listening, and successful learning.

Kimberley Edington

After School Programs ; Any Given Child ; In-School Residency

Ifamodupe Kimberley Edington, poet, writer, actress, and singer, has been active in Sacramento performing arts scene for many years. She was a member of the very first Sacramento Slam Team to compete at National Poetry Slam and has been a featured artist at local venues from Sacramento Poetry Center to Mahogany Poetry Series. Her commitment to educating through the arts has been demonstrated by her work with SAYS (Sacramento Area Youth Speaks) and WOW (With our Words); two organizations that use spoken word to build the skills essential to success in formal education while encouraging youth to find their voice and passionately pursue their education. She encourages every student that she has the privilege of supporting to expand their mind and vocabulary and to communicate their story with value while being aware of the context (historical and emotional) for their own and the stories of others. She also stresses the importance of being able to articulate one's ideas clearly and authentically using a pen, voice, rhythm, body and anything else that’s handy.

Kristy Oshiro

Any Given Child ; In-School Performance/Assembly ; In-School Residency

Kristy Oshiro has over 25 years of experience in the art of Japanese taiko drumming and performs and teaches all over the world. She started playing taiko at age 9 in Kona, Hawai’i with Kona Daifukuji Taiko and was an instructor and touring ensemble member of Portland Taiko from 2001-2007 while getting her bachelor’s degree in Music Performance in Percussion at Portland State University. She was also an instructor and youth programs director at Sacramento Taiko Dan from 2007-2014. Having learned taiko from a young age, Kristy values the impact the art form can have on youth and her teaching style reinforces three key principles of respect, spirit, and perseverance. Lessons also include the history of taiko drumming, Japanese language and culture, basic hitting technique, and traditional rhythms mixed with games and songs.

Math and Mariachi (pie fractions, equivalency, syllables & music)

In Math and Mariachi, your families participate in an Aztec percussion group and perform musical phrases written in Nahuatl (pronounced naw-wa-tul), the language of the Aztecs. But first, they learn how musical rhythms are based on equivalent fractions—from traditional Mariachi folk songs from Mexico, to popular selections by Los Lobos and Carlos Santana. After that, the kids make their own homemade shakers and join together for an exciting concert of Aztec rhythms and indigenous melodies from ancient Mexico!

Math and Music (geometric shapes, fractions, and patterns)

At the Math and Music presentation, you'll learn how to play popular hand drum rhythms from West Africa, and how to create your own drum patterns using Phil's on-line drum machine. In addition, you'll hear Phil's five favorite fractions with a musical journey around the globe. Along the way, you'll hear instruments and songs from Indonesia, China, Ghana, Mexico, and the Caribbean. Phil will also show you some of his geometric-shaped instruments, and teach you how to fold those shapes into an origami popper for a music making activity!
