The art scene in Sacramento is off to a banging start in 2017. If you’re unsure about which galleries or events to see this Second Saturday, then follow this guide!
“Wabi-sabi” is the Japanese idea of seeing the beauty in imperfections. b. sakata garo’s latest show exemplifies this by showing off “flawed beauty” from 11 diverse artists. I’m most excited to see what they’ve got on display from one of my all-time favorite artists, Robert Arneson. After checking out this eclectic collection, I’ll head over to The Mill for either some kombucha or straight black coffee.
Whimsical and Dreary:
My next stop will take me to Viewpoint Photographic Art Center for their dual exhibition, Simultaneity and Detroit: Where We Used To Live. These two exhibits couldn’t be more different, but nevertheless, I’m intrigued by their divergent takes of photography. Detroit: Where We Used To Live features empty nighttime images of the forgotten metropolis taken by Bill Schwab; while Don Manderson’s Simultaneity explores the intersection of nature and technology. Afterward, I’ll head over to The Rind for one of their delicious grilled cheese sandwiches.
Strokes of Sacramento:
Local landmarks will be the focus of this month’s Union Hall Gallery In Sight exhibition. Bob Miller and Azita Khoramroudi will share their unique views on the region with oil and acrylic paints. When I’ve had my fill at Union Hall, I’ll jet down the block to Midtown BierGarten for an Ayinger Celebrator Doppelbock.
Collaboration and Listen:
My last stop for the night will be Sol Collective’s Bars and Beats: Poetry and Producer Showcase. This event pits over 15 artists together to see what happens when you combine poetry and beats. Proceeds from the event will support Sol Collective’s efforts to purchase their building so they can continue to uplift the next generation of Sacramento artists. Later, I’ll head out to Oak Park Brewery to close out my night over a Salty Dog Coffee Porter.
