An annual favorite, august August features work by many of the talented Davis Arts Center staff. The exhibit includes a wide range of media including ceramics, mixed media, textiles, charcoal, photography, acrylic, oil, and watercolor.
In addition to the work on display during the Second Friday reception, the Capoeira class, under the direction of Susie Pike, as well as the Davis International Folks Dancers are scheduled to perform. Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art that combines strategy, attacks, dodges, acrobatics and dance into a dynamic fight-like game, performed with music. The 10-15 minute demonstration will include live capoeira music featuring the berimbau (a single-string, percussion instrument), pandeiro (similar to a tambourine), atabaque (a tall, wooden hand drum), and agogo (a bell), as well as singing traditional songs in Portuguese. The International Folk Dancers of Davis are planning to present folk dances from China as well as Northern and Central Europe. At the end of their presentation, the audience will be encouraged to participate and join in and do the Pokemon Ondo, a modern Obon festival dance from Japan. This should be a fun reception!
The exhibit features: Teanna Ackerley, Taylore Amato, Jamie Angello, Robert Armstrong, Verena Borton, Capoeira under the direction of Susie Pike, Judy Catambay, Davis International Folk Dancers, Yea! Dale, Michaela Daystar, Jason Edmonds, Stacie Frerichs, Nicole Hebert, Houghton Kinsman, Mica Phan, Shelli Porterfield, Stephanie Thayer, Stacey Vetter and Caroline Ziser.
