Are We Widows and Orphans?
November 21, 2009
Add Review/Comment
In July it all seemed so peaceful and quiet. The American Navy had taken over California; the United States flag had been raised at Monterey, Sonoma, and here at Sutter’s Fort. But then something happened at Los Angeles, and our Consul was kidnapped and they needed men to once again bring quiet to California. The women and children are seeking refuge at Sutter’s Fort. The women are taking over the jobs while most of the men are away. This is not what they expected after the long wagon ride to California. No one is sure what is happening. Winter is coming and the men are not back. Is no news, good news? Or are they widows and orphans?
