Enfrascada

Sacramento’s longest running Latinx theatre company, Teatro Espejo, presents Enfrascada by Tanya Saracho, a spellbinding dark comedy featuring an all-female cast, director, set designer and lighting designer. Saracho, who is the creator and show runner of breakout 2018 television show Vida on the STARZ network, writes a whip smart and hilarious play about broken hearts, best friends, and the power of brujeria — ancient folk magic.

“Enfrascada” means obsessed (and also translates to “jarred”) and Alicia becomes hell bent on getting her (cheating) boyfriend back. Through a series of reluctant visits to curanderas (wise women), conjuring honey jar spells, lively pep talks from her besties, and inspirational quotes from her kooky dissertation writing cousin, Alicia searches for the one thing that will help get her through her darkest hour.

Enfrascada is directed by Nicole C. Limón, a lecturer in the Department of Theatre and Dance at CSU, Sacramento who chose the play in an effort to create more opportunities for women in theater. Gender parity is a major goal for Teatro Espejo, and Tanya Saracho is one of the funniest contemporary Latina playwrights out there. She’s a founding member of The Kilroys, a group of female playwrights and producers who are taking tangible action to address and improve gender parity in American theatre. The play is ultimately about women empowering each other, while also honoring the real struggle, devastation and confusion of heartbreak. It’s also laugh out loud funny, and makes for a perfect girl’s night out!
