The word “ashtanga” means eight-limbed and it reminds us that yoga encompasses not just the physical poses, but can also include our breath, our gaze, our perspective, and our dharma. This is the birthplace of power vinyasa. The practice of Ashtanga Yoga is a series of poses specifically sequenced with breath and vinyasa flow to promote physical strength and mental clarity.
In this workshop, you will be guided through the primary series of ashtanga. They will give you a basic understanding of the poses and provide some foundational insights into the practice. They will cover the principles of Ashtanga Yoga and how these relate to your yoga practice:
-breath (pranayama)
-bandhas (energetic locks in the body)
-dristi (gaze point)
-vinyasa (linking breath + movement)
-upekkha (equanimous mind)
There will be an opportunity to be assisted in the shapes to help you find some nuanced techniques which will expand your yoga practice. This workshop is intended to familiarize you with this special practice and empower you to check out the ashtanga class offered on our schedule Sunday mornings at 7:15am.
