Macbeth for Kids, written by Lois Burdett, adapted by Megan West with original music by Rob Broadhurst, tells the story of a brave Scottish general named Macbeth who receives a prophecy from a trio of witches that one day he will become King of Scotland. Overtaken by ambition and encouraged by his wife, Macbeth takes the life of King Duncan and claims the Scottish throne for himself. He is then overtaken by guilt and paranoia and continues down a destructive path showing how unchecked ambition can spiral out of control. Adapted for younger students, the themes are relevant to today’s anti-bullying messages and the effect of selfish pursuit at any cost.
This family-friendly and accessible musical adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic is written in rhyming couplets and performed by STC School of the Arts Pre-Professional Ensemble and Young Professionals Conservatory students.
Note: This Pre-Professional Ensemble program serves students ages 7 to 13 and culminates in a full-length production on STC’s stages. These workshops, taught by professional directors and actors, offer students the experience of participating in a fully-produced play with sets, costumes, and lighting, as well as performance and collaboration skills as they work together to tell great story.
