Monsters in Visual Art and Film

Break down the beasts of art history, from Dracula to King Kong in a class that covers the Middle Ages, 21st-century Hollywood, and everything in between. In the context of Todd Schorr’s Atomic Cocktail exhibition, explore how childhood nostalgia, popular culture, and art history can be used to depict memories, visions, and dreams that are highly stylized and personal. Stick around after the presentation for a light-hearted, easy monster drawing lesson. Participants supply their favorite writing or drawing pencils and any type of paper.

Instructor Kristi Cortez earned her Master of Arts in Film Studies from Chapman University and is now a professor of media studies at Chapman University. Although her degree is in film, Kristi believes that an understanding of all forms of art allows for greater engagement with any artwork, as all mediums inform one another. She has instructed adult courses for the Crocker such as Botanical Illustration, Film Noir and Painting, Artist in the Spotlight: Frida Kahlo, and Video Art. Kristi approaches teaching with the goal of foregrounding the humanity behind aesthetics and forging connections between the viewer and the artwork itself. She believes that every medium of art tells a story and it is through interpreting these stories that we grow.
