HEAD TO THE PERFORMING ARTS CENTER AT SACRAMENTO CITY COLLEGE

Community leaders, educators, librarians, and award-winning authors are partnering to celebrate Sacramento’s first Latino Book and Family Festival.

Seventy-one Latino Book and Family Festivals have been held in the U.S., but never in Sacramento until now. San Diego, Los Angeles, and Chicago have been among the past hosts since 1997.

Dozens of authors will hold workshops, including “How to Get Published.”  Some will sell and, in some cases, give their books to families and children. There will also be book and poetry readings.

Astronaut Jose Hernandez will take the main stage at 11:15 a.m.

Dolores Huerta, founder and president of the Dolores Huerta Foundation, will be the keynote speaker at noon. The heroic activist, 93, co-founded the United Farm Workers of America with Cesar Chavez.

Aztec dancers, a Ballet Folklorico, and other performers will provide live entertainment. Savory foods will also be sold.

The goal is to promote the love of reading, a key objective of Empowering Latino Futures, a San Diego County nonprofit and the main sponsor, which believes literacy creates better lives.
