Wounded Deer: A Frida Kahlo-Inspired Gallery Show

Rising artist Raul Mejia, whose artwork is a bold blend of Mexican and American culture, will be debuting in time for Frida Kahlo’s birthday week. Art lovers and collectors are invited to the free festive gallery opening event, with a live artist talk and wine in historic Old Sacramento. Wounded Deer exhibit runs until the end of July.

Mejia’s art is non-traditional and flavored with a pop-culture flare which elevates story and history. Mejia began his artistic journey as a street artist where he brought his Mexican roots into the Sacramento art scene and ultimately created a well-recognized, distinctive, colorful style.

Raul Mejia is one of three siblings born in Mexico City and was eight months old when his mother carried him to the United States. Today he is a proud citizen, who coexists between American and Mexican culture.

Wounded Deer is a solo gallery show of Mejia’s artwork inspired by the life of Frida Kahlo and the influence she has had on his personal growth. Innate metaphorical and spiritual elements captivate curiosity, distill beauty and provoke thought in this exhibit showcasing a reminder of life, death and all the beauty that exists in-between in the here and now.

Mejia is an environmental artist, with a keen message to create beautiful artwork without adding to the ever-growing problem of pollution and production waste. Mejia’s art is mostly painted on items that would have been discarded like recycled wood panel boards, and his canvases utilize frames built from repurposed wood and the aesthetic is beautiful.

Art lovers and collectors are invited to the gallery exhibit. The gallery space is well ventilated with floor to ceiling accordion French doors that open to the patio, creating an indoor/outdoor setting.
