The Upside of Upcycling Exhibition

This exhibition features new artwork made with discarded materials by Sacramento artist Julie Bjorgum. Fish made from electrical wire, clocks from giant wooden wire spools, and high gloss planet-like disks from steel ductwork are a few examples of sculptures and mixed media wall hangings featured in this exhibition.

Julie Bjorgum has a day job working around discarded wires, wood, and metal at RagingWire Data Centers, Inc. in Sacramento. This experience inspired her to repurpose these materials into art. Using recycled materials is a mainstay of Bjorgum’s art practice, but being around materials that would be either thrown away or consume more energy during recycling stretched her imagination. Her employer was also inspired and commissioned Bjorgum to create work for new data centers throughout the nation, including two in Sacramento.

The public is invited to meet the artist and view her work at a free reception on Thursday, May 7 from 4pm to 6pm.
